The Inspire Circle Gets Crafty

Our most recent project ‘The Inspire Circle’ funded by National Lottery reaches out to women and young girls in mostly marginalised  hard to reach communities in Bolton. The project aims to address lack of leadership in women generally but particularly in BAME communities. Weekly sessions were organised were women participants took the lead and conducted sessions. They were leaders instead of participants and spectators. All participants really enjoyed taking in leadership roles. It boosted their self esteem and confidence. They felt worthy and appreciated. A variety of sessions were conducted ranging from food, art, makeup sewing, embroidery, fitness and mental wellbeing.

NOMINATIONS are pouring in for the annual Inspire Awards which honour women from in and around the Bolton area. The closing date to suggest an individual for the prestigious awards is January 31 and, as organiser Gulnaz Brennan, stated: “We want to hear about all those remarkable women whose work is never highlighted.” The awards themselves will be made at a special presentation evening at the Macron Stadium on Saturday, May 5. Last year, around 300 women attended the event when it was held at the University of Bolton and the Octagon Theatre’s Artistic Director Elizabeth Newman took the main Woman of the Year Award. The awards, originally started in a much smaller way as part of the Women in Neighbourhoods’ project, has grown over the years. This year, there are main awards sections cover...

Volunteer Blog- Souls Migrated Documentary Shoot Part 1

On Friday 22nd April, filming began on the Women in Neighbourhood’s (WiN) production of a short documentary called Souls Migrated. The film captures the thoughts and memories of people who migrated to the UK – specifically memories of their original homeland, which in some cases they were forced to leave in traumatic circumstances. In an age where politics and political events are sometimes being interpreted by a minority as a licence to attack immigrants, verbally and physically, WiN aims to provide a reminder that the vast majority have become valuable members of our society, and that some came here as a consequence of war and horrific events for which most of us simply have no personal frame of reference. A team from the TV film and video production company began filming in Queen’s Pa...

Karen Openshaw: In Celebration of Women

On 8th March we celebrated International Women’s Day, a special day on many levels. But first, let me go back a couple of days. The 6th March was the birthday of my eldest daughter, Meganne, this year was her 18th birthday so, on the 8th March this year, she experienced the day as a woman rather than as a girl. On 8th March I have, for many years, joined with Christian women from local churches who pick up the theme for that year and financially support women in difficult circumstances from other Countries. Throughout the day prayer takes place for the Women and girls of the World all across the World. It always feels special to be a part of an International prayer movement. For the past four years this day has held a particular resonance; because it marks the day my mum in law passed a...
