Mangoes are widely used in cuisine. Sour, unripe mangoes are used in chutneys (see Mango chutney), pickles, dhals and other side dishes in Bengali cuisine, or may be eaten raw with salt, chili, or soy sauce. A summer drink called aam panna comes from mangoes. Mango pulp made into jelly or cooked with red gram dhal and green chillies may be served with cooked rice. Mango lassi is popular throughout South Asia, prepared by mixing ripe mangoes or mango pulp with buttermilk and sugar. Ripe mangoes are also used to make curries. Aamras is a popular thick juice made of mangoes with sugar or milk, and is consumed with chapatis or pooris. What does Vegan mean?

The term ‘vegan’ was coined in the 20th century, but evidence of people opting not to eat animal products can be traced back over 2,000 years. As early as 500 BC, Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras promoted harmony among all species and ate a vegetarian diet. At around the same time, Buddha was discussing vegetarian diet with his followers.  In the early 19th century, the concept of veganism was beginning to be formed, with Dr William Lambe and Percy Bysshe Shelley amongst the first Europeans to publicly object to consumption of eggs and dairy products on ethical grounds. We are delighted to introduce House of HANDIs, the latest in our series of food-related social projects and a continuation of the HANDI project, made possible thanks to the National Lottery Fund. through its urgent response fund. We wanted to find a way for women, especially those from BAME backgrounds, to find ways to communicate with others in order to help overcome the stress of lockdown. HANDI~ Food Connects

Engaging the most vulnerable during the pandemic HAND~ Food Connects  Our latest project HANDI and its activities are funded by National Lottery through its urgent response fund. Twice a week cooking sessions and workshops have been taking place online bringing women together. The sessions are hugely popular and much needed respite for women. We also have local chefs  and experts who talked and chatted and shared their skills.  Food/recipe packs, along with recipe books and dry ingredients were distributed. Weekend cooking session saw families coming together as well, and hot food was sent to the vulnerable and those isolating.  Women in the sessions took lead and shared their family recipes and cooking secrets.
