Inveiled #40HERstories …the search is on ….

Unveiled ...the first #40Stories to be featured in #100WomenStories #LegacyBook. Would anyone like to share their story? #100years #100women #100stories We each have unique talents and gifts that make us different. But not one of those talents and gifts is more important than the next. And not one of those talents or gifts is any good without others to complement it. Because it is only the contribution of the many that creates the world we need. The current narrative is about the equal recognition and appreciation of women’s contribution to our communities. Something we are all learning to do better – with current changes to law and widespread conversation.   https://youtu.be/jNj4hZhks5Q

Inspiring Women Honoured at Annual Awards

SCORES of Bolton’s most inspiring women were honoured when the 2018 Inspire Awards were held at the Macron Stadium. Around 500 people were present to see 26 awards distributed to women from every area of local life – the charity field, social care, business, sports, industry and also highlighting individual achievement. The culmination was the 2018 Inspire Woman of the Year Award which was presented to Debbie Dowie who established the Boot Out Breast Cancer charity. Awards’ organiser Gulnaz Brennan said she was “very proud” to be able to honour the area’s remarkable women. “We had so many nominations and there were just so many individuals who could easily have been winners,” she explained. These were the fourth Inspire Awards “and by far the biggest,” she added. We have been able t...

The Biggest Loser!

I feel like a celebration. Billy Fury once sang, “half way to paradise; so near yet so far away……” Today marks the half way point of the Biggest Loser challenge; a healthy weight loss campaign that is sponsored to raise money for Bolton Hospice. My target was to a) complete the 12 weeks without failing (gaining weight) or b) physically harming anyone (because I expected to be miserable) and c) if possible lose 2 stones. So half way through I am in a great mood. Weigh in Number 1 was 25th January 2018 and I was 17 stone 4 lbs. Today I am 15 stone 11lbs. I’ve lost 21 lbs in 6 weeks and I am very happy with that. But I cannot take my eye off the ball….. I’ve been this close to my goal before and fluffed it, sabotaged it, whatever you call it and I’ve put weight back on. BUT I’ve not been und...

Mary’s Maisha Story

An extraordinary story of determination and survival. Mary learned to make bags from banana leaves and jewellery from recycled paper – and taught it to others – as a way of bringing skills, fellowship and finance to widows and other women caught in the poverty trap. She herself suffered a personal crisis which put the initiative on hold. Now, with an initial helping hand from friends in the UK, she is confident that, not only will the craft initiative be resurrected, but her story of coming through difficult circumstances will also help other women. She said: "Maisha is the Swahili word for life and what I've been through is life. Now, not only will I be able to teach women about craft, but I will also be able to teach them about life."

Karen Openshaw: In Celebration of Women

On 8th March we celebrated International Women’s Day, a special day on many levels. But first, let me go back a couple of days. The 6th March was the birthday of my eldest daughter, Meganne, this year was her 18th birthday so, on the 8th March this year, she experienced the day as a woman rather than as a girl. On 8th March I have, for many years, joined with Christian women from local churches who pick up the theme for that year and financially support women in difficult circumstances from other Countries. Throughout the day prayer takes place for the Women and girls of the World all across the World. It always feels special to be a part of an International prayer movement. For the past four years this day has held a particular resonance; because it marks the day my mum in law passed a...

Inside a Women-Only Assembly in Pakistan

In a remote part of Pakistan, one woman is trying to end centuries of discrimination. Tabassum Adnan has set up an all-women assembly known as a Jirga in Swat valley - challenging the dominant male one. She overcame an abusive marriage to campaign for women's rights and has already been recognised by the US government for her work. While some in her community support her, she has also received threats but she told BBC Urdu's Riffatullah Orakzai that she will continue until "her last breath". Emma Gregson ‘Austerity’

Austerity affects nearly the whole of Britain, you have families struggling to make ends meet. Feeling guilty when they can't treat their children. Benefits being cut for important services needed. Some can't even afford cereal for their children which is main start to the day. You have social housing with rent increase and charging  separate for repairs in their own properties or not even doing the repairs at all. We live in a broken Britain and for many they can see no way out because the services they would go to are declining them support, I speak to people of all ages and everyone is affected in one way or another. I see addicts wanting change but t...

Gemma Aitchison YES MATTERS

My name is Gemma Aitchison and I want to talk to you about sexual objectification. This is my passion, what gets under my skin, what drives me every day. Let's explore what it means and you will see why. An object is something that serves a purpose for a subject. It is to be used to serve or gratify the needs of the subject. An object is replaceable. An object is disposable. You do not have to respect, consider or gain the consent of an object. You do not have to justify using or destroying or disposing of an object. It's just a thing, it doesn't matter. Keeping this in mind. Sexual objectification is to teach in ingrain the idea that a females worth is in her appearance. Or the approval of the male gaze. Their gratification. We see this in pornography, newspapers, magazines, advertisi...
