Mary’s Maisha Story

An extraordinary story of determination and survival. Mary learned to make bags from banana leaves and jewellery from recycled paper – and taught it to others – as a way of bringing skills, fellowship and finance to widows and other women caught in the poverty trap. Last year she undertook a challenge to live for five days as a 'homeless young person' to see for herself what it was like to live on benefits. Maura is director of Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme (BYPHS), a registered charity that provides temporary supported accommodation for people aged 16-25 in the Bolton area, including some with mental health and substance abuse issues.
